I am super excited about this! I want to embark on a totally handmade Christmas this year... would you care to join me? Maybe you aren't interested in making 100% of your gifts, but perhaps you would like to try a couple of things, or maybe I am late to the party and you have been doing this for years. Either way I'd love to hear about it!
Is this too early?
I cannot stop thinking about a few things I saw in the Napa Style catalogue. You may be aware that getting Napa style is quite expensive! But I have seen some things that I believe I could make with items I have on hand around the house.
Like these...
or this...
In past years one of my favorite things to do has been to make three kinds of biscotti and package them into cello bags to give to teachers and acquaintances. Usually for teachers I will add an ornament for an extra little something special. I am excited to share my biscotti recipes with you starting this Friday.
Last year I also made some wine bags to be used for blind tastings... my friends refer to them as "fun bags".
We love to do blind tastings when we all get together... and living in the Oregon Wine Country gives us plenty to sample!
This year I'd like to add homemade soap to my reportage. Have you ever made soap? I haven't, so this should be interesting. I am particularly interested in making soap with goat's milk. I have done a little research and have found some recipes that are made in the Crock Pot. Are you with me?
And don't forget about the
homemade crackers and onion jam that I posted about earlier this summer.
Like I said, I have big ideas! What do you think? Does this interest you? Would you like to hear of these DIY exploits? Would you like to participate? What are your DIY ideas for Christmas? How many questions can a girl ask in one post?
Thanks for stopping by... I am interested to hear what you have to say!

Wow, I thought that was my brain talking for a minute..frightening, as I could actually keep up with all of your questions. Anyway, I would love to do mostly handmade this year and I need ideas so this sounds great.
If I actually start thinking about what to make NOW instead of sometime mid-December...thanks for the kick in the pants, lol!
I think it's a great idea and look forward to some good ideas (love the upcycled bottles for a start(!
I've never made soap, but I would definitely consider homemade soap as wonderful holiday gift, or any kind of gift for that matter. I'm not a very crafty or creative person by nature, but I love to watch other people work their magic. Can I participate by cheering you on from the sidelines? :-) Or who knows, maybe you will finally inspire me to channel my inner (long-lost) Martha Stewart. ;)
Love Napa style...those wine bottle/candle holders are very cool. Teach me!
I never saw your wine bags, very nice.
I need some of your enthusiasm to rub off on me :)
I don't make them all, but I do try to make many. Often make biscotti for the neighbours around here, as well as cookies and choc truffles. Had actually been thinking of making soaps this year too. Saw a wonderful TV program last year which had me rearing to go, but never got around to it then. Thanks for reminding me!
Can't wait to see what you post. It might be a good idea to get started now for Christmas!
Love the wine bottle candle holders! Very cool! I'd love to know how to make some of those!!!
We crank out 125 handmade gifts every year assembly-line style, with mugs filled with white cocoa mix, jarred soup mixes, cookie mixes, and chili mixes to name a few. Yes! I'm in the planning stages now!
And I have to figure out how to make those wine bottle hurricanes.
I love those candle holders, so effective! Last year I made loads of biscuits and things and put them in big glass jars as extra presents. They went down better than the things I bought. I'll definitely make more things this year.
SO....how did you get the bottoms off the bottles? I have been wanting my husband to get a drill bit for glass.....
I LOVE this look!!!
I am with you! Christmas has become so commercial with gift cards, "go get your own present before it expires" not to mention way to expensive in these times. I am making Christmas quilts, and we are having a family dance with a band for all of our neighborhood to celebrate together! I love your darling ideas and am cheering you on!
I would love to see your DIY exploits! They sound great.
However did you figure out that I was part of Courageous Homekeeping? It's been great, and we are getting lots of positive feedback. The gal who thought it up is actually going to be at Selah teaching a couponing class!
I have been dreaming of a (white Christmas) 100% homemade Christmas for years now! Every year around this time I start to get excited about making homemade gifts for everyone...and then...the time passes...the months go by...and before I know it...it is too late! So, I'm with you for sure. I am committing to a 100%...or at the very least 90% homemade Christmas! P.S. I love, love, love those wine bottle candle holders! I would love to figure out how to cut the bottoms off...do you know how???
I am so with you on this!! For the last 3 years we have done only handmade gifts for our extended family - and you know what? They LOVE it.
This year we plan on doing goat milk soap (we've done both goat milk and crockpot soap, crock we used a regular milk recipe), pickles, relish, handmade earrings, salsa and honey from our hives (see lastest blog post)....and whatever else we can come up with !!
Well. I think we're going to do your biscotti as well - very excited about that one! :o)
It's such a joy to produce all this bounty on our small farm, and share it with others.
Great post!
Blessings ~
Thanks for all the great ideas! UGH! It is that time already?? I love the bottle/candles. So purty!
I like the ideas. I have been trying to pare down the gift giving. Last year I knitted a lot of the gifts I gave to people. I also gave pear butter than I had canned, dried organic apples. Made aprons out of decorative dishtowels for teachers - etc. I like the hand made items. I haven't started thinking about Christmas yet!
It just seems like we have so much stuff now a days, that I am trying to give less stuff and more consumables.
I'm with you on this, Heather! I've made our gifts for years for our family and friends and now they do, too, so we get some fun, creative things each year! I'm going to do a whole week in early October on handmade gift ideas...and I'm going to be watching yours as well. :-)
I think it is a wonderful idea. I love the packaging on your biscotti. I can bake, so that is the extent of my homemade gifts. I do enjoy finding great packaging for them though!
Heather,
Your handmade is elegant -anyone will be so glad to get something from you.

How are your handmade Christmas activities coming along?
I just found out that what we call Big Family Christmas will involve a homemade gift exchange. I am looking forward to it!
