I had the sweetest surprise one summer day last year when I was walking through the yard to see what was blooming. This little baby was the size of our cat... I couldn't believe it. It was perfectly still with the exception of its nostrils flaring in and out. I called Bob over to see it, and we stood in awe. Then the panic set in.
Do you know what to do if you find a baby deer without its mama? While Bob stood guard, I ran into the house and did a quick search on Google to find this...
Does often leave their babies in a secluded spot with express instructions that the fawn stay put, no matter what, until she returns. Just because a fawn is found alone does NOT mean it is abandoned. The mother is probably just grabbing a quick bite to eat. Leave the baby alone unless you see a deceased mother.
I couldn't see the mama anywhere, though I am sure she must have been watching us. I snapped these photos, and then we went to tell the boys so they could see. When we returned the baby was gone. Mama had seized the opportunity to call her baby to safety. We saw the two of them later in the field below our house.
*Reposted from February. It is a dreary day here today, and these pictures always make me smile.

How adorable!! We get a lot of deer in our yard and woods but I've never seen a baby so close. One was sleeping under our neighbor's slide!
Such pretty pics.

My best friend had one in his back yard this summer, and his boys even laid down next to it for photos, careful not to touch it. This is so cool, and your photos are as always are stunning and smile inducing.
Wow, what an experience. I'm so glad the momma came back for her baby!
Wow! What a great story...I would definitely not have known to do what you did even though I have encountered mom and baby together before...the photos are adorable...don't think I would have been able to resist the urge to touch;)
These beautiful photos sure got my day off to a great start!!! What a marvelous opportunity to see this sweet fawn and get photos...what a memory this will be!!!
Oh wow! I would have been in awe too! What an absolute special treat that was! I love precious moments like that. I know you can't...but you just wish so bad that you could reach out and pet the sweet little thing!
How nice! The part that got me was that the fawn was no bigger than your cat? It must only been days old!
